Tasek Merimbun, Lake in Tutong District, Brunei
Tasek Merimbun is Brunei's largest natural lake, an S-shaped body of water about 70 km from Bandar Seri Begawan and 27 km from Tutong Town. It covers 120 hectares within the 7,800-hectare Tasek Merimbun Heritage Park. Two islands lie in the lake: Pulau Jelundong, reached by a 235-metre wooden walkway, and Pulau Labi-Labi.
The area became the first ASEAN Heritage Park in 1984 following surveys that documented its ecological importance. This designation protects the natural diversity of the lake and its surroundings.
The water is dark brown and banks can be slippery, so wear sturdy footwear. The best time to visit is in the morning when light is most favorable for bird watching.
The dark colour of the water comes from tannins released by fallen leaves; a Chinese source also links it to the Meluncur tributary flowing through peat swamp forest upstream. The lake's two islands are Pulau Jelundong, reached by a 235-metre wooden walkway, and Pulau Labi-Labi, named after the soft-shelled turtle.
