Billionth Barrel Monument, Oil production monument in Seria, Brunei

The Billionth Barrel Monument is a structure in Seria made of five concrete pipes forming an arch decorated with Islamic floor tiles and gold details. It stands near the beachfront and marks the location where one billion barrels of oil have been extracted from local fields.

The monument was inaugurated on July 18, 1991 by Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah to commemorate the extraction of one billion barrels of oil from the Seria field. The installation marks a major milestone in Brunei's oil history and economic development.

The monument incorporates five pillars to represent the Five Pillars of Islam, reflecting how the oil industry is connected to faith in Bruneian society. The design shows how religious values and economic identity are woven together in the local culture.

The monument is freely accessible during the day with no entrance fee required, but shade is limited in the area. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and bring water, especially in hot weather, as the site is open and exposed.

The monument stands about 38 meters (125 feet) from the S-1 site, the first oil well discovered in 1929, where an original steel bar remains preserved. This proximity connects the modern structure to the historical origins of oil production in the region.
