Clearwater Cave, Underground cave system in Miri, Malaysia.
Clearwater Cave is an underground limestone system in Miri featuring multiple chambers connected by passages where water runs clear and cold. The rock formations inside show layers of geological time, with stalactites and stalagmites creating intricate shapes throughout the passages.
Scientific teams started exploring the system during the 1970s and gradually uncovered the vast network of passages beneath the forest. The discoveries revealed this to be one of the largest cave systems connected to Gunung Mulu National Park.
Indigenous communities of Sarawak have maintained connections to these caves, incorporating them into their traditional practices and knowledge systems.
Advance booking for guided tours is required since exploration of the cave is only permitted with experienced guides. The path to the entrance involves a climb through rainforest with over 200 steps, so wear sturdy shoes and come prepared for physical effort.
The active underground river flows through different levels of the cave, creating pools with water so clear you can see straight to the bottom. Few visitors realize how deep these pools extend or how far the river continues beyond the main accessible areas.
