Lumut Lighthouse, Maritime lighthouse in Sungai Kayu Ara, Brunei
The hexagonal concrete tower rises 30 meters above the coastline with red, white, and blue markings that stand out against the horizon. The structure was built specifically for maritime safety at this location and serves as a key navigation point for passing vessels.
The Maritime Port Authority of Brunei Darussalam began operations of this navigation station in March 2005, marking a new era in regional maritime safety. This was a major step in modernizing the country's port infrastructure and shipping support systems.
The name translates to 'Rumah Api Lumut' in Malay, following the local tradition of calling lighthouses 'houses of fire'. This linguistic connection reflects how maritime navigation has shaped regional vocabulary and seafaring customs.
The tower emits three white flashes every 15 seconds, guiding vessels within a 45-kilometer radius toward the port facilities at Lumut. Best viewed from the water, this active navigation point requires awareness of maritime traffic in the area.
Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah visited this navigation station in 2006, acknowledging its importance to the nation's shipping sector. The site has since become a symbol of Brunei's commitment to modern maritime infrastructure.
