Pom Pom Island, Coral reef island in Celebes Sea, Malaysia
Pom Pom Island is a coral reef island in the Celebes Sea surrounded by white sand beaches. A fringing coral reef curves around the entire shoreline, creating a natural barrier for the shallow waters.
The island was used as a filming location in the early days of reality television, notably for the Swedish version of a survival competition series. This exposure brought international attention to the remote location.
The waters here are home to the Bajau Laut people, a seafaring community whose ancestors have lived on boats and fished these seas for many generations. You can still see their traditional boats and witness how deeply connected they remain to the ocean.
Most visitors reach the island by boat transfer from the town of Semporna, which takes about an hour depending on sea conditions. Resort staff handle the boat arrangements, making the journey part of the overall experience.
The waters here are home to more than 500 coral species and over 800 fish species, making it a marine hotspot of exceptional diversity. Many visitors are surprised to learn how much life thrives in such a small area.
