Los Loros, Agricultural settlement in Tierra Amarilla, Chile
Los Loros is an agricultural settlement in the Atacama Region, located roughly 60 kilometers south of Copiapo. The village centers on grape cultivation, and former railroad worker houses still line the central area, giving the place its distinctive character.
The railroad arrived at Los Loros in 1855, opening new opportunities for mining and farming in the region. Although the line initially served its purpose, the San Antonio section was closed shortly after it began operations.
The Nuestra Señora del Carmen Church stands at the heart of community life and hosts celebrations on July 16 that blend religious devotion with neighborhood gatherings. These events bring residents together in ways that define the social fabric of the settlement.
The settlement is easy to navigate on foot, with its main buildings clustered in the central area. The dry, hot climate calls for plenty of water and sun protection when exploring the village.
The name comes from parrots that once nested in the cliffs of the area until farmers drove them away. These birds were so present in the local landscape that the settlement took its name from them.
