Roman Catholic Territorial Prelature of Yauyos, Catholic territorial prelature in San Vicente de Cañete, Peru.
The Roman Catholic Territorial Prelature of Yauyos is an ecclesiastical administrative division covering parts of the provinces of Cañete, Yauyos, and Huarochirí in the Lima Department. The structure allows focused pastoral care for communities spread across the mountainous terrain and valleys within this territory.
The prelature was established on April 12, 1957 by Pope Pius XII's papal bull Expostulanti venerabili, with Monsignor Ignacio María de Orbegozo as its first leader. Its creation responded to the need for better pastoral care in the mountainous provinces of the Andes region.
The Cathedral of San Vicente Mártir serves as the spiritual center where the Catholic community gathers for worship and celebrations throughout the year. It shapes the religious identity of the region through its role in local religious life and gatherings.
The prelature operates two seminaries that train priests and religious leaders in the region for pastoral work. Nuestra Señora del Valle focuses on initial formation while San José provides advanced theological studies for candidates.
Since its founding, the administration of this ecclesiastical institution has been led by Opus Dei priests, creating a distinctive organizational approach. This sustained leadership by the same religious community has shaped a specific spiritual and administrative character for the prelature.
