Museo Arqueológico Antonini, Archaeological museum in Ica, Peru.
The Museo Arqueológico Antonini is an archaeological museum in the city of Nazca, in Peru's Ica Department, displaying objects from the Nazca culture including pottery, woven textiles, and preserved organic materials. Seven indoor rooms organize the objects by type and period, and an outdoor area extends the visit with reconstructed structures.
The museum was founded in 1999 by an Italian center for pre-Columbian archaeology to house objects recovered during excavations carried out in the Nazca region over the preceding decades. That research work formed the basis of the collection on display today.
The collection brings Nazca daily life into view through pottery, woven textiles, and personal objects found during excavations. The ceramic pieces stand out for their painted animal and geometric motifs, which appear across many of the displayed items.
The visit covers both indoor galleries and outdoor paths, so comfortable shoes are a good idea, and allowing enough time to see both sections makes for a more complete experience. The museum is located in the center of Nazca and is easy to reach on foot from most hotels.
The outdoor area of the museum contains a section of the Bisambra Aqueduct, one of the ancient underground canal systems the Nazca built to channel water in this very dry region. Seeing it up close makes clear how far their water management reached, long before modern technology existed.
