Cahuachi, Archaeological site in Nazca Valley, Peru

Cahuachi is an adobe archaeological center on the southern bank of the Nazca River in Peru's Nazca Province. The site spreads across dry desert terrain and includes dozens of mounds, terraces and raised structures partially covered by drifts.

The center emerged around 200 before the Common Era and served for centuries as a religious gathering place for communities across the region. Activity ended around 600 of the Common Era when inhabitants left the site to desert sands.

The center's name refers to its role as a gathering point for believers from across the valley. Visitors today see sand-covered platforms where communities met for special occasions and performed religious acts before the site was abandoned.

Access follows unpaved routes and requires accompaniment by local guides who know the way through the desert. The terrain is partially exposed and sits far from settled areas, so visitors should bring drinking water and sun protection.

The ground beneath some areas carries water that comes from the mountains and flows in a natural aquifer. This hidden source explains why the builders considered this spot sacred in a dry region and erected ceremonial constructions here.
