Muyu Muyu, Archaeological site in Uranmarca District, Peru.
Muyu Muyu is an archaeological site in Chincheros Province with stone structures located at 3000 meters elevation in the mountainous terrain of Apurímac Region. The complex consists of multiple platforms and walls spread across a large area.
The site dates to the Chanka civilization, which controlled the territory before their conquest by the Inca Empire under Pachacútec. This pre-Columbian culture built the structures before the area became part of the larger Inca realm.
The name comes from Quechua, where 'muyu' means circle, and this is reflected in the round shapes visible throughout the site. Visitors can see these circular patterns repeated in how the walls and platforms are arranged.
A visit requires coordination with local authorities in advance, as the site is remote and difficult to reach. Prepare for thin air and cold temperatures at this high elevation.
The site features an eight-platform pyramid structure that reveals the advanced construction techniques of its builders. This multi-layered design is unusual and shows the architectural skills of the Chanka people.
