Choquequirao Regional Conservation Area

The conservation area spans 103,814 hectares across varying elevations from 1,800 meters to 6,271 meters at Nevado Salkantay summit in central Peru.

The Regional Conservation Area, established in 2017, encompasses ancient Inca settlements including archaeological ruins dating back to the fifteenth century.

Local communities maintain traditional practices while sixteen endemic bird species and Andean bears inhabit the montane forests and dry valleys.

The main access point begins in Cachora town, where visitors can find accommodations and arrange guided treks through the conservation territory.

The protected zone contains diverse ecosystems ranging from humid montane forests to snow-covered peaks, alongside deep canyons formed by river erosion.
