Temple of the Moon

The Temple of the Moon is a complex of altars and carved rock formations inside a natural cave near Cusco. The walls display pumas, snakes, and condors hewn into the stone, reflecting Inca spiritual beliefs.

The site was built during the 15th and early 16th centuries under Inca empire rulers. It served as a venue for nocturnal rituals where priests observed lunar phenomena and performed ceremonial offerings.

The name refers to Inca reverence for lunar cycles, whose spiritual practices remain visible in the carvings today. Local guides often mention the connection between the cave and night sky, as the orientation of the space allowed observation of astronomical events.

The site sits above the city and requires a short ride or a multi-hour walk from the center. The path can be slippery, so sturdy shoes and a flashlight for exploring the cave are advisable.

Openings in the cave ceiling allow light rays to fall on specific sections of the altar, varying with time of day and season. Some visitors notice that the carvings stand out more clearly during full moon, highlighting the ritual use.
