Salcantay, Mountain summit in Cusco Region, Peru
Salkantay rises to 6,271 meters as the highest mountain in the Vilcabamba range, displaying massive glaciers and steep rock faces above deep valleys.
The first successful climb to Salkantay's peak occurred on August 4, 1952, when a French-American team led by Fred D. Ayres reached the summit.
The Inca people considered Salkantay a sacred mountain spirit, making offerings of coca leaves and chicha during ceremonies at its base.
Reaching the summit requires three days of travel from Cusco and involves climbing 1,800 meters through glacier, snow, ice, and rock terrain.
When viewed from Machu Picchu's main sundial during rainy season, the Southern Cross constellation aligns directly above Salkantay's peak.
