Lake Salinas is a salt lake in the Arequipa Region located at approximately 4,300 meters (14,100 feet) elevation with distinctive white salt deposits and shallow waters. The landscape sits near Misti volcano and forms part of a wetland area recognized internationally for its ecological value.
The area received protected status in 1979 when the Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve was established to preserve natural resources and wildlife in this highland zone. This early conservation effort marked recognition of the region's ecological importance.

The lake sits about three hours from Arequipa city by vehicle, requiring passage through Chiguata village to reach it. Morning departures work better for observing wildlife, so plan accordingly if animals are your main interest.
Between January and June, three flamingo species—Andean, Chilean, and James—gather at the lake, sometimes forming flocks reaching around 20,000 birds. This seasonal congregation transforms the lake into one of the region's premier bird-watching destinations.
