Hospital Goyeneche

Hospital Goyeneche is a medical facility in Arequipa comprising 19 pavilions connected by pathways and interspersed with multiple garden areas. The grounds contain specialized departments including oncology, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics, and emergency services spread across the property.

Construction started in 1905 following a substantial donation from Archbishop José Sebastián de Goyeneche and the hospital began operating in 1912. During the 1920s the facility gained recognition as one of South America's most advanced medical institutions.

The complex displays early 20th-century European architectural influences through its neo-gothic details and ornate building designs visible throughout the grounds. This design choice reflected the city's ambition to establish a modern healthcare facility that matched international standards of the time.

The grounds are large with buildings spread across the property, so it helps to get oriented when arriving or join a guided tour. Early morning visits are more comfortable for exploring given the site's elevation in the Andes region.

The Goyeneche family sourced cutting-edge medical equipment directly from Paris, giving the facility a significant advantage over other South American hospitals at the time. This investment in European technology became a defining feature of its early success and reputation.
