Iglesia San Juan Bautista de Yanahuara

Iglesia San Juan Bautista de Yanahuara, Colonial church in Yanahuara District, Peru

Iglesia San Juan Bautista de Yanahuara is a stone church in the Yanahuara District of Arequipa region built from white volcanic rock. The building has a single nave with barrel vault, a square bell tower, and a facade decorated with floral motifs and cherub faces.

The building was completed in 1750 entirely from white volcanic stone and retains its original high choir arch and main portal from the mid-18th century. This structure is a relic of the colonial period when such churches served as religious and community centers.

The facade displays religious figures like Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Dominic of Guzman in decorated niches that frame the entrance. These saints represent the spiritual traditions that locals and visitors connect with during prayer.

The church offers regular services for visitors interested in attending prayer times throughout the week. It is helpful to check current visiting hours in advance and dress respectfully when entering this active place of worship.

The columns feature pre-Hispanic imagery through carved cherub faces wearing feather headdresses that represent native expressions of power and authority. This blending of European and indigenous elements shows how two worlds came together in this building.
