Harvard Observatory, Arequipa, Astronomical observatory in Arequipa, Peru.
The Boyden Station is an astronomical observation facility in the mountains near Arequipa that was equipped with large telescopes for sky observation. The high-altitude location provided ideal conditions for capturing celestial objects through optical instruments.
The observation station was founded in 1891 when a bequest from Harvard made it possible to establish a research center in the South American region. Operations ended in 1927 when activities were relocated elsewhere.
The site carries the name of a private benefactor whose estate made its founding possible. Visitors can still sense how this place served as a window to the stars for generations of observers.
The site lies in the mountains above Arequipa and has limited accessibility. Visitors should prepare for thinner air at high elevation and bring suitable clothing.
Using telescopes at this site, a researcher discovered an outer moon of Saturn that still carries that name today. The discovery was based on long-exposure photographs taken with special glass plates.
