Sir Bani Yas, Natural island and wildlife reserve in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
Sir Bani Yas is a large island off the coast of Abu Dhabi featuring varied landscapes with salt domes, hills, and extensive coastal areas. The island is home to mangrove forests along its shores and long sandy beaches that line much of its coastline.
Archaeological digs uncovered a Christian monastery from around 600 AD and Bronze Age settlements scattered across the island. These 36 sites reveal that the island was inhabited and held significance from prehistoric times.
The island is named after the Bani Yas tribe, who lived here for centuries and practiced pearl diving as a way of life. Walking through the island, you can still sense the legacy of these early communities in the scattered remains of their settlements.
Ferries to the island depart from Jebel Dhanna Jetty, located on the mainland coast some distance away. Plan your visit in advance, as crossing to the island takes time and daily ferry schedules may be limited.
The Arabian Wildlife Park occupies roughly half the island and holds thousands of free-roaming animals including antelope, giraffes, and big cats. Visitors drive or walk marked routes and observe these creatures in conditions close to the wild.
