Drin, River system in southeastern Albania
This river system flows through southeastern Albania, formed where the White Drin from Kosovo and Black Drin from North Macedonia meet. It travels through varied terrain before reaching its terminus near the coast.
In ancient times, the waterway was called Drilon and supported numerous Illyrian settlements along its banks. The river played an important role in settlement patterns throughout different historical periods.
Communities along the river practice fishing and water management methods that remain part of daily life today. These activities shape how local people relate to the waterway and its surroundings.
Several large hydroelectric power stations use the river's flow to generate electricity for much of the country. These facilities shape the landscape and serve as key infrastructure points in the region.
Near its end, the river splits into two branches, with one flowing toward the Adriatic Sea and the other joining the Bojana River. This division at Rozafa Castle is a geographical feature that many visitors overlook.
