Pirogoshi Cave

Pirogoshi Cave is a natural cave in the Skrapar District that extends deep into limestone cliffs near Gradec canyon. The entrance is sizable and the interior divides into several spacious halls connected by narrower passages and galleries.

The cave underwent its first systematic exploration in the 1990s when Italian specialists documented the network of passages and chambers. This investigation helped establish scientific understanding of the site's extent and structure.

Local stories speak of an ancient ruler who sought shelter within these caverns during his travels through the region. These tales have shaped how people in the area view and speak about the cave today.

The route starts from the town square of Corovode and follows a reconstructed path alongside the Skrapar river toward the cave entrance. Wear sturdy footwear and bring a light source, as the walk crosses uneven terrain and involves moving through narrow cave sections.

The interior contains unusual red cave pearls that form alongside stalactites, stalagmites, and stone waterfalls across multiple chambers. These red formations are particularly noteworthy because they appear only in certain cave systems.
