Wings of Tatev, Aerial tramway in Syunik region, Armenia.
Wings of Tatev is an aerial tramway stretching 5.7 kilometers across the Vorotan River Gorge, connecting the village of Halidzor with the Tatev Monastery. The cabins hold around 30 passengers and move continuously above the steep mountain terrain below.
The tramway opened in 2010 and set a world record at the time as the longest non-stop double track cable car system. It was part of a larger project to improve economic conditions and connections in this isolated region.
The tramway links communities separated by a deep gorge and provides access to an ancient monastery that has held meaning for locals across generations. Today, residents use it as a practical connection between isolated villages in the mountainous region.
The tramway operates most days, and the journey takes about 12 minutes from one end to the other. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a light jacket, as conditions at the stations and surrounding areas involve uneven terrain and mountain weather.
The ride offers a direct view into the deep gorge that looks impressive from above, while also saving time compared to the long road route. Many visitors are surprised at how quickly it bridges what was once an extremely remote crossing.
