Vai'ava Strait, Natural strait in Eastern District, American Samoa
The strait separates Pola Island, rising 420 feet high, from Polauta Ridge along the coast of Tutuila Island in American Samoa.
The National Park Service designated 250 acres surrounding the strait as a National Natural Landmark in 1972, recognizing its geological formations.
The land around the strait belongs to community ownership, reflecting traditional Samoan property management and social organization patterns.
The marker location requires visitors to walk along a beach section of the Pola Island Trail, approximately 0.3 miles from Route 006.
The 400-foot cliffs at Pola Tai provide nesting grounds for brown boobies and white-tailed tropic birds throughout the year.
