Leeward Islands

The Leeward Islands are a group of volcanic islands scattered across the South Pacific that form part of French Polynesia. Each island rises dramatically from the water, ringed by coral reefs and dotted with small villages and bays.

The first Europeans arrived at these islands in 1722, and France gradually established control over them during the 1800s. This contact transformed the settlement patterns and governance of the islands over time.
