Luana Liki Hotel, building in Nukunonu, Tokelau
Luana Liki Hotel is a small lodging on Nukunono island in Tokelau, offering seven basic rooms and a bar overlooking the lagoon. The rooms are simply furnished with water views and cooled naturally by trade winds, without air conditioning or modern amenities.
The hotel was founded in 1995 when Luciano Perez, a former school principal, built the facility using his savings to house business visitors and workers. The site previously operated as a small pub from 1981 onward, gradually transforming into a guesthouse in the 1990s to accommodate specialists from New Zealand and beyond.
The hotel serves as a rare gathering place where locals and visitors meet on an otherwise isolated island. Karaoke evenings hosted here are among the few social events where the small community comes together.
The hotel is extremely remote and accessible only by boat from Samoa, a journey of about a day. Boats dock at the lagoon's edge, and guests must transfer to smaller local vessels to reach the property.
The hotel is the only commercial overnight lodging in all of Tokelau and primarily serves government staff and specialists rather than tourists. Most entries in its guest book are officials, experts, and researchers arriving for projects and official visits.
