Los Toldos

Los Toldos is an archaeological site with multiple caves near the Deseado River where researchers have uncovered stone tools, animal bones, and layered geological deposits. The excavations reveal evidence across roughly 2 meters (6 feet) of depth showing different periods of human settlement.

The site shows evidence of early human settlement dating back roughly 13,000 years in Patagonia. The caves were repeatedly visited over long periods of time, creating a record of continuous human presence.

The discovery of various lithic artifacts, including arrowheads, scrapers, and modified stone shards, demonstrates the technological capabilities of early hunter-gatherer societies.

The site lies roughly 140 kilometers from Pico Truncado and requires advance planning to reach. The remote location means visitors should arrange transportation ahead of time.

The cave layers reveal different human cultures from various times, including material remains that help researchers understand ancient ways of life. These varied layers make the site an important window into Patagonia's past.
