Faro Cabo Raper, Maritime navigation lighthouse in Taitao Peninsula, Aysén Region, Chile.
Faro Cabo Raper is a maritime navigation lighthouse located on the Taitao Peninsula in Aysén Region. The structure stands 14 meters tall and sends out regular light signals to guide ships traveling along this section of the Chilean coast.
Engineer George Slight directed the construction starting in 1900, though operations did not begin until 1914. The lighthouse was built to improve safety for ships navigating these challenging waters.
Chilean Navy personnel live here year-round to keep operations running smoothly. They have adapted to the reality of living in this isolated location far from towns and other communities.
This location is extremely remote and requires careful planning before visiting. Access is best during the warmer months when weather conditions are more stable and predictable.
A narrow-gauge railway using the Decauville system was built in 1913 to transport supplies up to the structure. The locomotive stopped working in 1921, but traces of the track remain visible in the landscape.
