Patagonia National Park

Patagonia National Park spans vast terrain featuring snow-capped mountains, dense forests, and numerous lakes and lagoons throughout the region. The Chacabuco Valley runs through the center, carved by river systems and enclosed by high peaks on all sides.

The Chacabuco Valley served as a passageway for nomadic groups across thousands of years before cattle ranching transformed the region in the modern era. This shift marked a major change in how the land was used and managed.

Archaeological sites scattered through the Chacabuco Valley reveal how the Aonikenk people adapted their hunting practices to this harsh landscape over many centuries. Their presence shaped how this region was used long before it became what visitors see today.

The park offers multiple trails, camping areas, and lodging options that can be explored from information centers throughout the grounds. Regular public transportation connects the park to the nearby city of Coyhaique, making access straightforward for most visitors.

The park protects one of the last refuges for the Huemul deer, a rare species found nowhere else in such concentration. Autumn transforms the dry grasslands into striking red-colored Lenga forests, creating a natural display that changes the landscape's appearance dramatically.
