Puerto Ingeniero Ibáñez

Puerto Ingeniero Ibáñez is a small settlement on the north shore of General Carrera Lake at 350 meters elevation, surrounded by mountain views and productive farmland. The steep ridges framing the water create a sheltered valley where the village spreads along the shoreline.

The settlement was founded in 1924 and named after Cornelio Ibáñez, a Chilean mining engineer who conducted exploration in the surrounding region. Its creation marked the opening of this remote Patagonian area to settlement and development.

Artisans here craft pottery and woven goods using wool and leather from nearby farms, preserving skills passed through generations. These handmade items reflect how the community draws directly from its rural surroundings.

A car ferry connects this village to Chile Chico across General Carrera Lake with regular service throughout the day. Plan around the ferry schedule and be prepared for weather delays, as this remote location can experience sudden lake conditions.
