Presidente Ibáñez Bridge, Bicycle bridge in Puerto Aysén, Chile

The Presidente Ibáñez Bridge is a single-span suspension bridge over the Aysén River in Puerto Aysén, on Chile Route 240. Two 25-metre metal towers stand on reinforced concrete bases, each carrying bundles of eight steel cables with 22 vertical suspender rods per side. These rods hold two stiffening girders and lattice crossbeams that support a lightweight reinforced concrete deck. The steel structure was designed and built by Krupp Rheinhausen in Germany.

President Carlos Ibáñez del Campo promoted a suspension bridge over the Aysén River to link Puerto Aysén during his colonization push in the late 1950s. Work began in 1961 under his successor Jorge Alessandri, a year after Ibáñez's death, and the bridge opened in 1966 under Eduardo Frei Montalva. It was declared a National Monument of Chile in 2002.

The bridge is named after President Carlos Ibáñez del Campo, who promoted the colonization of the Aysén Region and after whom the region is also named. On 7 February 2012, local fishermen and community leaders blocked traffic on the bridge, starting regional protests demanding better living conditions.

The bridge carries Chile Route 240, linking Puerto Aysén with Coyhaique and the port of Puerto Chacabuco; it is a road bridge for motor traffic, not a pedestrian or cyclist crossing. It meets Avenida Eusebio Ibar on the north bank and the Ribera Sur district and town centre on the south. Since 3 December 2025, after a tension cable on the south side broke, use has been restricted to a single lane for emergency vehicles and public transport.

At 210 metres, it is Chile's longest suspension bridge, and its steel structure was designed and built by Krupp Rheinhausen of Germany. On 7 February 2012, local fishermen and community leaders blocked traffic on the bridge, starting regional protests over living conditions. Since 3 December 2025, a broken tension cable has restricted traffic to a single lane for emergency and public transport vehicles only.
