Campamento minero Puerto Cristal, Mining settlement on Lago General Carrera, Chile.
Campamento minero Puerto Cristal is an abandoned mining settlement on the shore of Lago General Carrera with residential buildings, administrative structures, and industrial facilities organized into three distinct sectors. The complex spreads across the terrain with different functional areas that reflect how the former community was organized.
The settlement developed in the 1940s into a major mining center producing significant quantities of lead and zinc for the Chilean economy. It was established as a permanent hub meant to support long-term resource extraction in this remote region.
The settlement formed as a tight community where miners from Chiloé Island maintained their own traditions and social customs. These local practices continue to shape how the abandoned place looks and feels today.
The site is located roughly 50 kilometers southwest of Puerto Ingeniero Ibáñez and can be reached by routes that run along the northern shore of the lake. Visitors should prepare for rough terrain and bring sturdy shoes along with protection against changing weather conditions.
The site preserves a cemetery carved into the mountain rock, showing that the community intended to settle here permanently. This burial ground was cut directly into the stone and remains one of the most striking traces of human activity at this abandoned location.
