El Bolsón, Mountain town in Río Negro Province, Argentina
El Bolsón is a mountain settlement in Río Negro Province surrounded by rivers and lakes at the base of Piltriquitrón. The town sits at an elevation of 312 meters and is shaped by its network of natural water systems and forested slopes.
The settlement began in 1885 when Chilean farmers Lucas Cárdenas and Elcira Estrada established themselves in what was then called Valle Nuevo. This founding by immigrants laid the groundwork for the modern municipality.
The weekly market is a gathering place where local artisans display handmade goods and sell regional products like fresh berries and traditional Argentine foods. This event shapes the town's character and reflects the community's connection to craftsmanship and local production.
The town lies 120 kilometers south of San Carlos de Bariloche and is served by a local airport. Visitors will find accommodation and tourist services on hand to help plan their stay and activities.
The mild climate allows outdoor activities throughout the year, with pleasant temperatures between spring and autumn. Summer days can turn warm while winters are cool, but heavy snow is uncommon in the valley.
