Mercado Modelo, Municipal marketplace in Temuco, Chile
Mercado Modelo is a multi-level market building in downtown Temuco, Chile, with food stalls, craft vendors, butcher shops, fishmongers, and restaurants all under one roof. Each floor tends to focus on a different type of trade, making it easy to move from fresh produce to cooked food or handmade goods.
The market first opened in 1930 and quickly became a central supply point for the city of Temuco. A fire in 2016 destroyed much of the building, leading to a full reconstruction that resulted in its current form.
The market is one of the places where Mapuche crafts, fresh regional produce, and southern Chilean food come together in one space. Watching locals pick up their daily groceries or sit down for a quick meal at one of the small counters gives a real sense of how the city lives.
The building sits in central Temuco and is easy to reach on foot from most parts of the downtown area. A morning visit tends to work best, as stalls are well stocked and activity is at its peak.
The roof built after the 2016 fire uses a timber structure that draws on local building traditions, giving the rebuilt market a character that most modern market halls lack. Despite being entirely new, the building kept its original name and continued its role without interruption.
