Cutral Co, city in Neuquén Province, Argentina
Cutral Co is a small city in Neuquen Province located in northern Patagonia, Argentina. It grew around oil fields and refineries with wide streets, open spaces, and a practical layout designed for work and everyday living.
The city began in the 1930s as an organized workers' settlement around the Laguna Colorada, planned by local leaders including doctor Victor Ezio Zani who distributed land plots to oil workers and families. After several name changes and official recognition in 1935, it developed into a proper town during Patagonia's oil boom era.
The name Cutral Co comes from a local language term meaning 'water of fire,' reflecting the city's origins tied to oil and natural resources. Today, residents keep local traditions alive through gatherings in parks and community celebrations that honor the town's hardworking heritage and its connection to the land.
The city is easily reached by car on Route 22, about 109 kilometers from Neuquen, with most attractions accessible on foot or nearby. The climate is dry and windy, so it's wise to protect yourself from the sun and carry plenty of water, especially during warmer months.
The Carmen Funes Municipal Museum holds an impressive collection of fossils from the region, including remains of some of the world's largest dinosaurs. The exhibits display skeletons and replicas of these prehistoric giants that roamed the landscape millions of years ago.
