Cholguán, Rural village in Yungay, Chile
Cholguán is a small rural settlement in the Biobío Region surrounded by farmland and timber processing facilities. The village spreads across gently rolling terrain with modest homes connected by unpaved roads.
The village developed around its railway station on the Monte Águila-Polcura branch line, which became a key transportation hub for the region. This rail connection shaped the settlement's growth and made it a center for moving timber.
The name Cholguán comes from the Mapudungun language, where 'chol' refers to a place associated with shellfish and reflects the indigenous roots of this area.
The village sits at a modest elevation accessible by regular vehicles, though some local roads remain unpaved. Visit during the warmer months of December through February when conditions are drier.
The village became famous for producing wooden boards that were so widely distributed in Chile that locals simply call thin wooden panels 'Cholguán boards'. This product name became the standard term for this type of material across the country.
