St. Mary of the Angels Cathedral

St. Mary of the Angels Cathedral stands opposite the Plaza de Armas with a contemporary design whose large front wall depicts the Holy Trinity. The interior removes all columns to create open sightlines throughout the main worship space from every angle.

Construction took place between 1970 and 1972 as the city needed a new Catholic temple for its growing diocese. The building reflected how religious architecture was evolving during that era.

The interior walls display biblical passages in painted text, while the altar features a large painting of Jesus Christ that visitors encounter immediately upon entering. This blend of scripture and art shapes how people experience the sacred space.

Inside is a carved wooden statue of the Virgin of Carmen made from local timber that reflects regional craftsmanship. This work shows how local artisans contributed to the religious art within the building.
