Vilches, Mountain village in San Clemente, Chile.
Vilches is a mountain village in the Andes spread across three connected areas - Vilches Bajo, Centro, and Alto - nestled in the Andean foothills between the Claro and Lircay rivers. The settlement sits within forests of ancient hualo and rauli trees that create layers of vegetation as the landscape rises toward higher elevations.
The village emerged as an agricultural settlement in the Andean foothills and was later recognized for its natural importance. In 1976 it received protected status as a tourist area through an official government designation that acknowledged its environmental value.
The name Vilches comes from the Mapuche language meaning "totality of things". Local residents maintain strong ties to the surrounding landscape through seasonal celebrations that reflect their connection to the natural world.
Visitors can camp, picnic, or stay in cabins spread across the village's different sectors, with small supply stores in each area for basic needs. The best time to explore is during warmer months when trails are dry and easy to navigate.
The region is home to rare animal species like condors, pumas, and colorful tricahue parrots that visitors may observe in their natural habitat. These creatures thrive in the untouched forest areas surrounding the village.
