Senate of Chile, Legislative chamber in Valparaíso, Chile
The Senate of Chile is the upper chamber of the National Congress in Valparaíso with fifty members elected for eight-year terms. The building on Pedro Montt Avenue features a public viewing gallery from which visitors can observe the work of representatives.
The chamber was founded in 1812 with seven members to advise the governing junta and has since undergone several constitutional reforms. The present building in Valparaíso opened in 1990 as part of the return to democracy after military rule.
The legislative body uses formal address customs and ceremonial practices rooted in 19th-century tradition, visible during public sessions. Members often wear traditional business attire and follow fixed patterns for speaking rights and voting procedures.
Visitor groups can enter the gallery during session times but should check in advance when debates take place. The building sits on a hillside near the harbor, about a twenty-minute walk from the historic center.
The complex sits outside the capital Santiago, making it the only national legislative seat in South America located in a different city. The 1980s design uses concrete and glass and differs sharply from the historic government buildings in Santiago.
