Chilean National Congress Library, Legislative library in Santiago, Chile

The Chilean National Congress Library (Biblioteca del Congreso Nacional de Chile) is a legislative library serving the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies. It began in 1882 as the library of the Chamber of Deputies and was first housed on the second floor of the old Congress building in Santiago, erected between 1858 and 1876. Its director is the lawyer Diego Matte Palacios.

The library was founded in 1883 and has supported Chilean legislative activity through multiple government transitions. Over time it adapted to new technologies while keeping its core role serving the Parliament.

The library preserves extensive collections of Chilean legal documents and political archives that chronicle the country's legislative development. These holdings reflect the political shifts and institutional transformations that Chile has experienced over time.

Access to the reading rooms is open to researchers and visitors aged 18 and older, with staff available to help navigate the collections. Registering online in advance is a good idea if you plan to consult digital archives.

The library began in 1882 as the Chamber of Deputies' library, promoted by deputy Pedro Montt, later president of Chile (1906–1910). In 1885 it gained its own budget line for a librarian, approved by 33 votes to 1, and Montt donated part of his personal collection.
