Ascensor Mariposas, Historical funicular railway in Valparaíso, Chile
The Ascensor Mariposas stretches across 177 meters of track with an elevation difference of 46 meters, connecting Gaspar Marín Street to Paseo Barbosa.
The funicular began operations in 1906 and received recognition as a National Monument of Chile in 1998, marking its importance in transport infrastructure.
The funicular forms part of Valparaíso's network of 15 elevators that shaped the city's development and connected communities across different elevation levels.
Each car accommodates 10 passengers for the journey between stations, operating at a 25-degree incline through residential areas of the Mariposas Hill.
The upper station occupies 290 square meters while maintaining the longest route among Valparaíso's funicular railways at 160 meters in length.
