The Edificio Consistorial de Valparaiso is a five-story administrative building featuring French Renaissance design with mansard roofs and a central clock on its facade. Inside, it houses offices of the Chilean Navy alongside furniture from the building's original period.
After the devastating 1906 earthquake, architect Ernesto Urquieta redesigned this building, which opened in 1910 for Chile's centennial celebration. This reconstruction marked the revival of the city's administrative center following the disaster.
The building draws from classical Roman architecture, particularly in its central hall which mirrors the atrium of Casa Pansa from Pompeii. Visitors can sense this connection to antiquity in the carefully designed interior spaces.
The building sits at Plaza Sotomayor in the city center and is easy to reach on foot. Keep in mind that it functions as an administrative building, so interior access for tours may be limited depending on official activities.
The facade was restored in 2013, returning to its original blue color scheme after decades of being painted grey. This restoration brought back the building's historical appearance and made it a visual landmark of the port city.
