Cementerio N° 2 de Valparaíso, Historical cemetery in Cerro Panteón, Chile.
Cementerio N° 2 sprawls across terraced levels on the hillside and contains numerous mausoleums, stone monuments, and pathways with views toward Valparaíso port. The different levels allow for gradual exploration of this expansive burial ground with its many structures and paths.
The site opened in 1845 in response to urban expansion and began as a mass burial ground in Quebrada Elías before becoming a formally organized necropolis. The grounds expanded and became more structured as the port city continued to grow.
The entrance displays neoclassical design and opens into sections showing different architectural styles from various periods. The monuments and gravestones tell stories of individuals who shaped this port city.
The site is best explored on foot as paths wind between the different levels. Wearing sturdy shoes is recommended since you will walk on uneven ground and climb steps across the terraced sections.
A collection of sculptures and epitaphs documents how burial customs changed in this port society from the 1800s onward. These artistic and personal records offer insights into the lives and values of people who lived in this region.
