Cardonal Market, Covered marketplace in El Almendral district, Valparaíso, Chile
Cardonal Market is a two-floor covered market in the El Almendral district of Valparaíso, Chile, with stalls selling fresh produce, seafood, and meat. The upper floor is lined with small eateries where people sit down to eat rather than just shop.
The building was designed by architect Eduardo Feuereisen after the 1906 earthquake and completed in 1912. Its components were prefabricated in Germany and shipped to Chile for assembly on site.
Vendors at the market know their regular customers by name and often share tips on how to prepare what they sell. Walking through the stalls gives a clear sense of how food shopping is still a social habit in Valparaíso.
The market sits between Rawson, Uruguay, Brasil, and Yungay streets, so it is easy to reach on foot from most parts of the neighborhood. Morning is generally the best time to go, when the selection is at its fullest and the aisles are less crowded.
The steel frame of the building was fully assembled in Germany before being dismantled and shipped across the Atlantic to Valparaíso. This made it one of the earliest examples in South America of a large structure built from imported prefabricated metal parts.
