Iglesia Los Doce Apóstoles, Catholic church in El Almendral, Valparaíso, Chile

The Iglesia Los Doce Apóstoles is a Catholic church in El Almendral with a distinctive exterior, located at the corner of Avenida Argentina and Juana Ross, next to the National Congress building. The structure features tall walls, large windows, and a prominent cupola that rises above the surrounding streets.

The parish was founded in 1844, the second in Valparaíso after La Matriz, and met in temporary premises until the current church was built from 1869 to 1875 to plans by Juan Eduardo Fehrman with Teodoro Burchard. In 1874 catacombs were built as a burial vault; at least 104 people were interred there from 1875. During the War of the Pacific (1879-1884) the church served as a field hospital for wounded brought from the port. The 1985 Algarrobo earthquake severely damaged it, and it has been closed since the 2010 earthquake.

The parish was installed provisionally in several locations from 1844, making it the second parish of Valparaíso after La Matriz, before the current building rose from 1869. Its name refers to the twelve apostles, and the church stands as a landmark of Avenida Argentina, where the city's largest open-air market is traditionally set up.

The church sits centrally in El Almendral's commercial district and is easy to reach on foot from surrounding streets. Visitors should know that the area is active during the day and becomes quieter in the evening.

Beneath the church lies a catacomb gallery about eight metres long and four metres wide, used from 1875 as a burial vault for at least 104 people, including benefactors, religious and community members. In the 19th century it was looted and the body of a decorated Argentine general was removed. A tomb three metres deep sits close to the National Congress building.
