Bodegas de la viña Santa Carolina

Bodegas de la Viña Santa Carolina is a winery in Macul featuring three U-shaped buildings and an underground cellar built with adobe, wood, and traditional Chilean tiles. The complex displays neoclassical architecture with barrel-vaulted brick ceilings and carved stone walls designed specifically for wine storage.

Luis Pereyra Cotapos founded the winery in 1875 and named it after his wife Carolina Iñiguez, with French architect Emile Doyère designing the buildings. This project emerged during a period when European architecture and winemaking techniques contributed to Chile's modernization.

The winery takes its name from the founder's wife, reflecting 19th century Chilean winemaking traditions that remain visible today. Visitors can observe how traditional methods continue in the cellars, where stone and brick create the right environment for aging wines.

Visitors can join guided tours through the facility to explore the neoclassical architecture and winemaking process. Wearing comfortable shoes is advisable since underground areas are explored on foot.

The underground cellar uses natural temperature control through its depth and construction to maintain consistent conditions for wine maturation year-round. This system was developed long before modern cooling technology became available.
