Parque Intercomunal Víctor Jara, Floodable urban park in Santiago, Chile

Parque Intercomunal Víctor Jara is a 41-hectare floodable urban park running parallel to the Zanjón de la Aguada, between Avenida Vicuña Mackenna and the Club Hípico. It crosses the communes of Macul, San Joaquín, San Miguel, Pedro Aguirre Cerda and Santiago Centro, and its five-stage project plants thousands of trees, shrubs and native Chilean species.

The park opened as Parque Inundable Intercomunal La Aguada, built alongside the Zanjón de la Aguada between Avenida Vicuña Mackenna and the Club Hípico. It was later renamed after Víctor Jara, the Chilean singer and political activist killed after the 1973 coup. In 2016 the park inaugurated «El Árbol de Víctor», a giant mural painted collectively on its ground.

The park doubles as a flood-control basin: the Ministerio de Obras Públicas counts it as a solution to hold winter rainwater and keep the sector from flooding. Its five-stage project foresees thousands of trees, shrubs and plants, mostly native Chilean species.
