Discóbolo del Estadio Nacional, Bronze sculpture at National Stadium entrance in Ñuñoa, Chile.
The Discobolus of the National Stadium is a bronze replica positioned at the main entrance of the Estadio Nacional on Grecia Avenue in Santiago. The upright figure greets visitors as they enter the sports complex through the primary access point.
The bronze statue was donated by the Greek community of Chile in 1958 as a gift to the nation. The naming of Grecia Avenue followed during the 1962 FIFA World Cup, honoring the sculpture's origin and cultural significance.
The sculpture depicts an athlete standing upright rather than in the traditional disk-throwing pose of Greek art. This variation reflects how the Greek community chose to reimagine the classical athletic form for this location.
The statue is located directly at the stadium's main entrance and is easy to spot when approaching along Grecia Avenue. Access is free to view from outside and requires no special timing or planning to find it.
The artwork was covered with layers of white paint over several decades until specialists carefully removed them in 2010. The restoration revealed the bronze's original shine and the characteristic dark patina underneath.
