As-Salam Mosque, Sunni mosque in Ñuñoa, Santiago, Chile
As-Salam Mosque is an Islamic place of worship in the Ñuñoa neighborhood of Santiago, Chile, located on Avenida Campoamor. The building has a central prayer hall, community rooms, and spaces set aside for religious education.
The mosque opened in 1989 and was the first Islamic place of worship built on Chilean soil. Its founding gave the Muslim community in Chile a permanent and recognized space for the first time.
The As-Salam Mosque draws together Muslims from across Santiago for prayer, celebrations, and religious education. The name means "peace" in Arabic, and the building is also open to visitors who want to learn about Islam.
Entry is free, and visitors are welcome as long as they dress modestly and remove their shoes before entering the prayer hall. It is worth visiting outside of main prayer times if you want to look around without interrupting the congregation.
Architect William Tapia Chuaqui designed the building by combining Islamic design principles with local Chilean construction techniques, which can be seen in the facade and the way the interior spaces are arranged. This kind of meeting between two traditions is rare in South America.
