SIN ESTADIO, National stadium and historical monument in Ñuñoa, Chile
The Estadio Nacional sits on 62 hectares in Ñuñoa and holds 48,665 spectators in its main oval. The complex also includes tennis courts, an aquatic sports center, and a modern indoor gymnasium for different disciplines.
The complex was built in the 1930s and between September 1973 and November 1973 was used as a detention and torture center where thousands of people were imprisoned. The Chilean government later declared the facility a historical monument to ensure these events would not be forgotten.
The sports ground takes its name from Chile's founding in 1810 and represents the national identity of the country. Today visitors can attend sporting events or enter the memorial site that remembers dark chapters of Chilean history.
The grounds are reachable by several bus lines and the metro, with the nearest station just a few minutes on foot. Those who wish to visit the memorial site should note it occupies a specific area within the grounds and often has separate opening hours.
The facility was the venue for the 1962 World Cup final between Brazil and Czechoslovakia. International musicians such as Elton John and Guns N' Roses have also performed here, making the location known far beyond sporting events.
