Mawk'allaqta

Mawk'allaqta is an archaeological site featuring multiple stone structures and remains situated at 3,397 meters elevation in the Cusco Region. The site contains various buildings and architectural elements spread across the mountainous terrain.

The site dates to the Inca period when it served as a settlement in the Espinar region. It reflects architectural developments connected to the Inca territorial expansion across these highland areas.

The name comes from two Quechua words: mawk'a meaning ancient and llaqta meaning place, showing the indigenous language still rooted in this landscape. As you walk through the site, you hear locals use these same words when talking about their surroundings.

Reaching the site requires advance coordination with local authorities and traveling through challenging mountain terrain in Espinar Province. Visitors should prepare for the thin air at this elevation and bring appropriate gear for mountain trekking.
