The site was under construction at the time of Pizarro's conquest of Peru.

Ollantaytambo is an important tourist attraction due to its Inca buildings and as an access point to the famous Machu Picchu.

Ollantaytambo serves as one of the main starting points for the Inca Trail, a popular hiking route.

The town's old buildings have been continuously inhabited since the 13th century.
